The 2011 Publix Georgia Marathon

So I have officially registered for the Publix Georgia Marathon on March 20th, 2011.  I have just over 16 weeks to get my out-of-shape, “big boned” body over 26.2 miles of Atlanta.

My weight as of this morning is 234.4.  My goal weight for IM Florida: 185.0

I did a 5k run last night and it felt good.  I can tell how far out of shape I have fallen in the past two months.  There was a time in July when I could do that without walking.  Not so much any more.  I still managed to keep a decent pace, but had to walk 3 times over the course of the workout.

Last weeks progress on my sub-goals:

  • No fast food (Check)
  • No soda (Check) I have made an exception for a daily energy-drink for caffeine
  • Go to bed before 10:30p (6 of 7 nights)
  • Keep workouts (I missed Saturday, but plan on swapping for today’s rest day)
  • No alcohol (Check)

A few co-workers and I have signed up for a 5K road race next weekend.  I figure it will be fun and a good way to get back into the competitive spirit.

Fortune Favors The Bold

“Go Big or Go Home.”  That has always been my motto.  It’s time to put that to the test.  Last night I registered to compete in the 2011 Florida Ironman.

November 5th, 2011: 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run

As many of you know I have fallen off of the wagon recently, sidelined by injuries, increased stress at work, and a family life that includes expecting a new baby boy any day.  I have also fallen into my own trappings of staying up late and not eating healthy.

Here are the 5 keys to success (in order of importance) in competing in the Florida Ironman:

  1. Go to bed before 10:00
  2. Stop drinking soda (even diet/zero)
  3. Stop eating fast food
  4. Keep up with workout schedule
  5. Stop drinking alcohol

I believe that I can do these things, I can post a solid time in Florida next year.  The number one issue I have is staying up late.  When that happens, I am too tired to work out the next day, and my whole day gets off track (and I’m cranky).

The exception will be in managing the sleep time (or lack of it) for our new little baby which should be arriving some time in the next 30 days.  This will obviously impact the sleeping schedule, but I am committed to working around it.

238.4 lbs - My weight this morning.  I had been posting my weight on the site, but had stopped due to a lack of progress.  I am going to start again, in hopes that it keeps me focus on my goals.

Only 362 days left to train.

Clues To The Great Weight Mystery

Dave Thomas of Wendys

It was the fry-cook, in the kitchen, with the spicy chicken sandwich.

After examining all of the facts, studying all the clues, and much careful deliberation, I believe that I have solved the case of “Great Weight Mystery”.  It was this man, Dave Thomas, that is ultimately responsible.  Where’s the beef?!

You see, I have been unable to withstand the temptation of that tender, juicy, mouth-watering Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich (with Cheese).  I mean, how is a mere mortal like myself supposed to forgo what is undoubtedly the best tasting drive-thru offering ever created?

I haven’t.

I have consumed one at least twice a week for the last month.  Constantly on the go and needing to consume food to fight off that ravenous hunger caused by a tough workout, Wendy’s drive-thru has been an oasis in the desert.

But wait!  I have also discovered that Dave had two accomplices that must also be held accountable.

Captain MorgansMost Interesting Man In The World

These two men have infiltrated Team Iron Geek through work related dinners and meet-ups with friends.  They leverage the stress of a long work day and the oppressive heat of an Atlanta summer, to seduce me into consuming their weight-loss antidote.

I don’t always drink, but when I do, I drink too much for an Ironman in training.

Now that these conspirators have been out-ed, I am taking active measures to protect myself in the future.  I am working hard to plan out and schedule my meals well in advance, so that I am not caught in a moment of weakness driving home from a workout.  I will keep healthy snacks available for desperate times.

And it’s time to find that wagon again and hop back on.  The short term satisfaction of an ice-cold beer on a hot summer day will be of no consequence when struggling on mile 20 of the last leg of an Ironman.  It’s time to enact some self discipline and make sure that my short-term actions are aligned with my long term goals.

Got to keep heading in the right direction…
