This is probably going to be my last article before racing Ironman Canada on Sunday, August 28, so I thought it’d be a good chance for me to talk about race planning and visualization.

Parents, coaches and mentors have long been telling me to visualize winning, but it wasn’t until I started…

More Planning = More Sleep & Job Preservation

Weight: 237.8

It is all about proper planning.  And Sleep.

I was so exhausted when I woke up this morning that I ended up punching my iPhone repeatedly (hard) when I couldn’t get the alarm to shut off at 5:45a. I also yelled several F-bombs.  Kinda freaked my wife out.

I need to get more sleep.

When trying to do a workout in the morning, it takes a lot of effort, especially at oh-dark-thirty.  I find that if I do not have things lined up the night before, I spend way too much time in the morning on trying to get ready.  I end up running around trying to find my bike jersey, my water bottle, or figuring out what I am going to eat.  It wastes too much time and puts pressure on when I am going to get to work.

Here is some of the things that I do (or at least try) in order to make my mornings smoother:

  • Layout my clothes for tomorrow (both workout and work clothes)
  • Pack my duffel-bag with all the necessary items (heart monitor, watch, helmet, sunglasses, swim fins, etc.)
  • Pull out my pre-workout meal (typically a banana), breakfast (typically a bagel with peanut butter) and Gatorade
  • Make sure my briefcase is ready to go

This is a work in progress for me, I learn a little bit each day.  The more “ready” that I can be each morning, the more I get to sleep and the earlier I get to work.  Since I am holding my workout time as sacred (not reducing it if running late), then I end up being late to work.  That’s not cool.  And if I’m not late, I’ve been a little discombobulated:

  • I left my laptop home one day
  • I forgot my swim trunks yesterday (causing me to miss my lesson)
  • I forgot my wallet today (turned out to be an awkward end of lunch)
  • I rode my bike one day without liquid refreshments (not good)

When you add in the time to get ready, workout, and shower and get ready for work, it’s a lot of time.  Add to that a commute to and from the workout site (I’m currently using a bike path about 30 min from my house) and it’s hours.

Shaving even a few minutes off by having everything ready can make a big difference on the stress level of the day.

Only one workout today.  Phew.  I’m going to bed 5 minutes after my kids do.  =)
